Animals have always been a part of history, whether as loyal companions, working partners, or even unexpected celebrities. But while we often remember the people who shaped the past, the animals who stood beside them have their own incredible stories to tell. Some of these creatures became legends, while others were just living their lives in a world that looks very different from today. Whether wild or domestic, heroic or just plain adorable, these historic animals left their paw prints on the past. Take a look back at these fascinating snapshots of animals throughout history—you may be surprised at what you find!

Brooklyn Supreme

Brooklyn Supreme, A Gentle Giant

Known as the tallest and heaviest horse of his time, Brooklyn Supreme was a true marvel of nature. Standing beside him, men look diminutive, underscoring the sheer scale of this powerful horse. His gentle demeanor belied his massive size, making him a beloved figure and a testament to the incredible diversity in the animal kingdom.

Super Cute Penguins

These adorable penguins

Let’s talk about these adorable penguins. Did you know that these tuxedo-clad birds are highly social animals that often form large colonies, just like humans do? And when it comes to parenting, penguins take it seriously! Both parents take turns incubating their eggs, and once the chicks hatch, they are fed a regurgitated meal of fish and krill. These little ones must be well-fed, as they have to fatten up in order to survive in the harsh Antarctic climate. We can’t help but smile at this photo – have you ever seen a cuter, fluffier family?

Jack the Baboon

Baboon Jack

In the 1880s, a baboon named Jack earned a degree of fame by serving as the helper for a South African railroad worker named James ‘Jumper’ Wide. Wide lost both legs in an accident and trained Jack to push his wheelchair and operate the rail signals. Someone complained to the railroad when they saw the animal running the signals and an official investigation was launched. The investigators found that Jack was quite skilled at his job and never made an error. He was officially hired by the railroad and received twenty cents per day plus half a bottle of beer. Travelers loved to see Jack and his fame grew. Just how famous did Jack become? Well, today, he has his own Wikipedia page.

Manis the Beer Drinking Orangutan

Clint Eastwood and Clyde the orangutan staying busy on the set of Every Which Way But Loose

To paraphrase a wise man, don’t work with children or animals. Clint Eastwood didn’t really have a choice when he signed on to star in the comedy Every Which Way But Loose where he shared to screen with Manis the beer drinking orangutan. The pair make a great comedy duo on screen and it’s likely because their takes are so immediate. This is because if the takes went on too long Manis got bored. We’ve never been around a bored orangutan, but it doesn’t sound pretty. Whatever he did, it couldn’t have been that bad because Eastwood agreed to come back for the sequel.

RIP Laika

The First Living Creature in Space

Just one month after Sputnik, the Soviet Union sent the first living creature into space—Laika, a stray dog—on November 3, 1957, aboard Sputnik 2. While Laika did not survive the journey, the mission proved that living organisms could survive the conditions of spaceflight, marking another Soviet victory. Laika became a global symbol of the sacrifices made in the pursuit of space exploration, though her mission also sparked ethical debates about the treatment of animals in science.
