A Hillsborough, California home known as the “Western White House,” was recently sold for $23 million. The sale was one of the highest in the area’s history. The Neoclassical Georgian-style mansion spans over 24,000 square feet with 11 bedrooms and numerous bathrooms.

Compass agent Alex Bulgan, “The seller is happy that the property found a buyer that really appreciates the house and all of its history.”

Renowned architect Julia Morgan revamped the home in 1930 for George R. Hearst, a member of the Hearst media family. The design resembles the iconic White House.

Before the sale, the mansion was listed at various prices, starting at $38.9 million. An auction had been canceled before the property was sold,.

Another iconic California listing on the market is Darwin Deason’s mansion, known as “The Sandcastle.” The home is currently listed for $108 million. The sale would set a new San Diego County record.

Spanning nearly 13,000 square feet, the mansion features intricate stone columns, expansive balconies, and a private beach. It reflects old-world European design with lavish interiors.

Deason has extensively renovated the property, adding a guesthouse inspired by Versailles. He has invested a staggering $60 million in construction.

Despite its grandeur, Deason seldom uses the estate, opting to sell due to infrequent visits. “In the history of La Jolla, there has never been and will never be another property built on the waterfront like The Sand Castle due to the present oceanfront construction standards established by the State of California,” the listing agents said.

The listing agents added, “The opportunity to adjoin the two parcels in this location is so rare, and this fact, coupled with the seller’s no-expense-spared vision to bring the French Riviera to La Jolla’s oceanfront.”
